The villages of the island

Isola del Giglio, a gem set in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is famous for its picturesque villages and golden beaches. This small island is home to three main villages, each with its own peculiarities and fascinating stories.

GIGLIO PORT

an old fishing village

Located on the east coast of the island of Giglio, Giglio Porto is the first village that welcomes visitors arriving on the island by ferry from Porto Santo Stefano. This small and picturesque port, with its colorful houses, is surrounded by crystalline and transparent waters, a rarity for port areas. Walking through its lively streets, you can find many shops, restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors. A particular place of interest is the Torre del Saraceno, a watchtower dating back to the 16th century. A little further on, there is the cove of Saraceno, where there are the remains of the walls of a cetaria of a Roman villa. On the other side of the port, there is a small beach called lo Scallettino. Giglio Porto is also the ideal starting point for exploring the island both by land and by sea.

Giglio Castle

One of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Located on the heights of the Giglio Island, Giglio Castello is an ancient medieval village which has preserved its atmosphere over the centuries. It was built by the Pisans in the 12th century and subsequently enlarged and restored by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. The village is surrounded by imposing walls and dominated by the Rocca Aldobrandesca. Its narrow streets, often surmounted by arches, offer breathtaking panoramic views over the entire Tuscan Archipelago. Inside the village is the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, where various finds can be admired, including the ulna of San Mamiliano’s right arm. Giglio Castello also offers numerous restaurants, shops and services such as the post office, surgery and pharmacy.

Giglio Campese

the largest bay on the island

Giglio Campese, located on the western side of the island of Giglio, is a village overlooking the bay of the same name. Here, visitors can enjoy spectacular sunsets overlooking Montecristo and Corsica. The village has developed mainly around its beach, the largest on the island, and offers all the necessary services for a pleasant stay, including bathing establishments, diving centres, boat hire, restaurants and bars.
