Getting around on Giglio Island

The Isola del Giglio, a jewel set in the Tyrrhenian Sea, offers its visitors a myriad of ways to explore and enjoy its beauties. With approximately 22 kilometers of roads connecting the three main towns and the southern tip of the island, travelers can expect breathtaking views, natural spaces, pine forests, vineyards and glimpses overlooking the sea during their travels.

Giglio Island offers a variety of options for getting around and exploring. Whether traveling by public transport, renting a vehicle or exploring on foot or by bicycle, there is something for every type of visitor. The key is to choose the method of transportation that best suits your needs and desires, thus ensuring an unforgettable experience on the island.

Public transport and Rentals

The island has a bus service that runs between the three main locations on a regular basis, providing a convenient way to get around. For those who prefer more autonomy, there are NCC taxi services available, as well as options for car, scooter and bicycle hire. These means of transport allow visitors to explore the island at their own pace, discovering hidden corners and less crowded places.

For those who want a maritime experience, the island also offers the possibility of renting boats or using the taxi-boat service. These options by sea are ideal for those wishing to visit remote coves or tour the island by sea.

Bringing Your Own Car to the Island

Although the island is easily explored on foot or by public transport, some visitors may wish to bring their car to the island. In that case, it is highly recommended to reserve your seat on the ferry, especially during peak periods such as weekends, public holidays or the summer months of July and August. It is important to note that during the month of August, a self-certification is required to drive your vehicle on the island.

Refueling and Electric Charging

The island has two service stations: one located in Giglio Porto near the ferry dock and the other on the road that connects Giglio Porto to Giglio Castello, near the junction for Arenella. Although fuel prices are slightly higher than on the mainland, they are still affordable for those who decide to bring or rent a vehicle to the island. For electric vehicles, there is a charging station at the Hotel L’Arenella. However, it is recommended to contact the hotel in advance to check costs and availability.

Explore by bike or on foot

Giglio Island is also a paradise for cycling and trekking enthusiasts. With an area of only 21.1 km2, the island has considerable relief that offers challenging and scenic routes for cyclists. Similarly, the trekking paths allow you to discover the island away from the tourist flows, offering panoramic views of the Tuscan Archipelago and immersing yourself in the scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
