ANDREA BRIZZIHistorian and studious of the second half of the 19th century , he graduated at Pisa University where he discovered his passion of the history of Giglio island where he became solicitor and town clerk having therefore free access to the Local Historic Archive where he was fortunate to discover the book “Libro degli Statuti dell’Isola del Giglio”, which was a collection of legislative laws written in 1558. Thanks to his knowledge and intuition he wrote a text published on the newspaper “L’Ombrone” (from 1898 to 1900) entitled “Cenno storico dell’Isola del Giglio” which remains, still today, the most renowned treaty documenting the history of the community of Giglio island from 1900.

G. IVO BAFFIGIBorn in Isola del Giglio in 1899, he was a countryman but showed from the beginning a particular attitude for music which he improved by attending the clarinet classes held by the Maestro’s town band. During the first world war he was enrolled but thanks to his music knowledge he was employed in the military ship band Andrea Doria. Once the war ended he then went to Naples to attend clarinet classes held by Maestro Cesare Andrea Bixio who was a famous author of soundtracks for theatre, cinema, radio and television.
He later became director of the town band of Giglio Castello and Giglio Porto and subsequently moved to Porto Santo Stefano where he was appointed to create a band for the town. He continued his studies at the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna and participated in various music competitions winning the Piedigrotta Festival in Naples. Mr. Baffigi was a man of principles and virtues and dedicated all his life to music. He died in 1977 at the age of 78 years old. |

ENEA BRIZZIBorn in Giglio Castello in 1821 showed a talent for music from the very beginning . His modest family managed to enroll him to the Conservatorio Musicale di Firenze where he learned to play the trumpet. He then played for the Carabinieri Military Band as headmaster. His musical carrier was outstanding and successful : he also managed to play in Paris in front of Pope Pio IX in 1857.
He was an important patriot during the Italian Risorgimento fighting with Garibaldi against the Austrians. He wrote together with Mr. A. Brofferio, the “Canzone delle Guerra del 1866” in occasion of the liberation of Veneto. |

ENRICO ALBERTO D' ALBERTISHe was a Genovese, born in Voltri in 1846. He was a great sailor man, writer and explorer. The Captain sailed around the world 3 times and sailed around Africa once. During his rests periods he enjoyed to spend his time in the Tower of Campese. Throughout all his life he always cultivated his passion for meridians which he loved to build and to give as presents to his friends. One of these manufacts can be admired in Giglio Campese on the front of a house nearby the Campese Tower .
