Isola del Giglio is off the coast of central Italy, easily reached from both from the northern and southern parts of the country. It is accessible only by boat, primarily the ferry boats of the Toremar (website in English) and Maregiglio (website in Italian) lines, which depart several times daily from Porto Santo Stefano.

Train connections are convenient; the nearest train station is Orbetello-Monte Argentario. For those travelling by car, an important reminder is that during the month of August visitors are prohibited from bringing a motor vehicle to the island for a stay of less than 5 days (4 days minimum for caravans and campers). BY CAR

For visitors coming from France or from the NORTHWEST part of Italy, use the A12 motorway Genova-Livorno. At Rosignano Marittimo, take the SS1 Aurelia toward Grosseto and Rome. Passing through Grosseto, exit the SS1 Aurelia at Albinia and follow the signs to Isola del Giglio and Porto Santo Stefano, passing through Giannella and joining the SS440. Continue toward Porto Santo Stefano on the SS440, following it directly to the harbor from where the ferries depart for Isola del Giglio and Giannutri Island.

From the NORTHEAST part of Italy, the motorway is the A1 Bologna-Firenze, heading toward Firenze. Take the Firenze Impruneta exit toward Siena, and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the Raccordo Autostradale RA3 and heading in the direction of Poggibonsi, Colle Val D’Elsa, Siena, and Grosseto. After the Siena Sud exit, take the Grosseto exit to the E78/SS223. Approaching Grosseto, take the SS1 toward Roma and Grosseto Sud. Continue south toward Roma, and exit the SS1 Aurelia at Albinia. Follow the signs to Isola del Giglio and Porto Santo Stefano, passing through Giannella and joining the SS440. Continue toward Porto Santo Stefano on the SS440, following it directly to the harbor from where the ferries depart for Isola del Giglio and Giannutri Island.

Coming from the SOUTHERN part of Italy, including Rome, the motorway is the A12 Roma-Civitavecchia, Tarquinia, Ansedonia, then joining the E80/SS1 at Aurelia toward Grosseto. Exit at Orbetello, taking the SS440 towards Porto Santo Stefano and following it directly to the harbor from where the ferries depart for Isola del Giglio and Giannutri Island.

From the NORTHEAST part of Italy, the motorway is the A1 Bologna-Firenze, with exit Firenze Certosa and at the roundabout 1st exit to the Raccordo Autostradale RA3 direction Poggibonsi, Colle Val D'Elsa, Siena, Grosseto. Passing Grosseto, remain on the SS1 Aurelia direction Rome. Exit the SS1 Aurelia at Albinia and follow directions for Isola del Giglio and Porto Santo Stefano where the ferries leave for Giglio Island and Giannutri Island.
Coming from the SOUTHERN part of Italy, for example from Rome, the motorway is the A12 Roma-Civitavecchia , Tarquinia, Ansedonia along the SS1 Aurelia direction Grosseto with exit at ORBETELLO towards Porto Santo Stefano from where the ferries leave for Giglio Island and Giannutri Island.

BY TRAIN

The nearest train station is Orbetello-Monte Argentario. The train line is well connected via Trenitalia (website in English) for all those coming from Genoa or Rome; from some locations, "Freccia" ("Arrow") trains are available. From the Orbetello-Monte Argentario station, buses leave every 15 minutes for the ferry dock at Porto Santo Stefano (14 km). Taxis are also available at the Orbetello-Monte Argentario train station.

BY BUS

From Grosseto, regular interurban buses, operated by Tiemme (website in Italian), connect directly to Porto Santo Stefano with a stop at the ferry dock area. For those coming from Rome in the summer season only, the company Satabus (website in Italian) connects the capital city to Porto Santo Stefano with a stop at the ferry dock.

BY PLANE

The nearest airports are: Pisa, Roma Fiumicino and Roma Ciampino. Grosseto airport is open to charter and private flights only during the summer months. Private shuttle services to airports are available to and from Porto Santo Stefano. Please contact us for more information.
